The fur of the mammoths was not only brown, but also golden or white, or even red, annonced AP, basing its arguments on researches made in the university of Leipzig. The scientists' crew, led by Olger Rompler, studied DNA, taken of the bones of a mammoth, who lived 43000 ago in Siberia.
The researchers found the gene Mc1r - protein, which has an effect on the hair colour by people and by some other mammals. For example, if the quantity of this protein is small, then it gives red nuance of the hair by the humans and the cows, but white nuance by the mice, horses and dogs. This is why the experts concluded that once upon a time there were also mammoths with fair fur.
