In 1275 it was a small town on the dam of the river Amstel, called Amstelledamme. Thirty years later, in1300, it was a city with its on laws and government. With these laws, fishing and trade quickly brought Amsterdam considerable riches. By the 16th century Amsterdam had trade relations with countries all over the world. In the 17th century it was one of the richest cities in the world. Amsterdam has always been a city of immigrants. Its prosperity and openness attracted many people in the past. People of different origins came to live in the Dutch capital city. They brought wealth and skills with them. You can still see its rich past as you walk along the canals today. You can leisurely admire the splendid old merchants` houses. Amsterdam is a place of powerful attraction. Tourists say that `if you’ve been there once, you will be looking forward to your next visit`. Amsterdam has to be seen, but most of all to be experienced.
